View Full Version : Msn Email Worm ?
:USA: Quick question, does anyone have that e-mail worm addi.
You added to your address book, if you pick up the msn-worm it beams it in to cyberspace never to be heard from again.
The name used is 00011 the addi begins with worm@ I need the rest of the address.

I don't have it but I'm sure someone else will post it.
This does not make any sense to me. How would it work? It can't. Viruses do not send themselves out from Webtv address books. Webtv can't get a virus.
If a virus is sent to you and you send it there it's certainly not going to stop you from getting more.
0001! is the user name and worm@wormalert.edu is the addy for your MSN/WebTV address book.
This will not stop the virus, but will keep it from being sent to a PC friend where it can infect their computer.
FYI, From a Newsgroup post by THOM:
<snip>
The frequency and number of virus messages and "returned" notices we get is not related to anything MSNTV has done.
What you get is only remotely related to what any other user gets. It is dependent only on your email addy being in an infected PC somewhere.
If the PC
1. dies from the virus,
2. is cleaned up by the owner, or
3. is disconnected from the net,
the messages from it will stop.

I don't know if that address thing works or not but My returned Mail has slowed to one or two a day compared to the 15-20 I was getting.
Now maybe it just ran it's coarse thru MY mail or whatever but I'll be happy when this crap is done.
As an added precaution I told My friends in My e-mail book to be careful what they open that says it's from Me.
I told them I would put a (*) in the subject line if it truely is from Me.
What I don't get though is it's not sending from My primary account name but a secondary...and no other user name is infected....how is this?

If you are a Webtv user and you are either getting bounced viruses that say you sent them or your friends are saying they are getting viruses that say you sent them they are not from you. If anyone tells you that a worm or virus is sending out from your address book they don't know what they are talking about. All of the new viruses I hear about now have the ability to take an address off of an infected computer and use it as a from address. They don't even always get it from address books. Sometimes they get addresses from web pages or newsgroup posts that are in the users cache. I've gotten viruses before on addresses that probably wouldn't have been in anyone's address book.
If people still think we can get viruses I'd like to know when we got the ability to download and run exe files (which is what viruses usually are) and where these viruses are going when we have no hard drive.
Viruses are always or usually created to work on a specific operating system so they wouldn't work for us anyways.
I don't know if that address works for computer users but if it did I wouldn't bother even if I had a computer. I would make sure I had up to date antivirus software, make sure the security settings for my browser and e-mail were very high, and be very cautious about any attachments I get.
