Hi, I have been getting a little bored with the file manager I have now at webtv. Nothing has changed there in the 3 yrs I've had it. The photopoint feature is still on there. I was wondering if I am eligible for the extreme FM. I really don't know what that one includes. I do not build scripts myself but like to use the free cgi's that others make, etc. Could I change to a new FM with more features. Does it cost more? Thank You.

Gee Rose .. that's not exactly true, it's only been about 2 years, but .. if you're bored, you're bored... don't sugar-coat it for us. ;) .. and, we're the WTV-Zone, not webtv.

The file manager has remained the way it is for a while because we want it to load quickly. When we moved to the new server back in January, it was a major improvement in load time and processing power. The more "stuff" we add to the file manager, the slower things will load, and the greater the possibility for security leaks. That is not an option as far as we're concerned.

Photopoint itself may not be around anymore, but the uploader is still functional for other things.. we just haven't renamed it yet. We have some other "cosmetic" changes to be made to the file manager, which will be made in time.

Keep in mind, the Zone "staff" consists of Larry and myself. We have a few folks who volunteer miscellaneous duties, but scripting and webmastering are done by us, along with all of our "normal" duties. Not making excuses, just explaining how things are.

The Xtreme file manager is included in the new admin system that Larry purchased and installed, called "cpanel". It is different from the Zone file manager, and it has different features.. FTP, webmail, and other goodies .. no beamer, and no Zone Magick.

You have to own a domain to have an account on Xtreme. If you have a domain, then you can get your account switched over relatively easily. The smallest account size available there is 100 meg for $100.

You can check out a demo version of cpanel at their main site, and you'll see exactly what Xtreme has to offer now.

http://www.cpanel.net

Depending on what version of MSNtv you're using, cpanel may or may not work for you. The 2.8 and 2.8.1 upgrades work okay with it, but the 2.7 (and older, I assume) may not work with it.

Just for curiosity's sake, what type of changes would you like to see at the WTV-Zone?

Hi Kari,
Thanks for the info on the extreme FM. Your right, if I'm bored, I'm bored. I saw that photopoint thing today and it got on my last nerve. I had all my photos in there awhile back. I took some estrogen and feel better now. :)

I think it will be three years in Jan. that I've had the zone. New features-- I get a lot of attachments at webtv and it would be good if I could get them into the zone FM somehow, rather than the scrapbook. And one thing that I've asked about before that bothers these ole grandma's eyes is the same color cursor in the edit page as the text. A red cursor would be much easier to see where I'm at. I'm always trying to hunt that thing down.
You and Larry have been doing a great job. I know it can't be easy with just the two of you. I should have kept my boredom comments to myself, didn't mean to sound sassy. Thats not like me. Not a good day. I wish you continued success.

Hey Rose,

I know how you feel .. It just seems that whenever we try to get one thing done, something else jumps up and hollers "No me! My turn!!" .. and the original project has to be put on the back burner. Such is the case with the "cosmetic" changes to the file manager.

We do have exciting plans for the future .. not necessarily for the Zone file manager itself, but things that will definitely effect Zoners in a positive way.

No harm, no foul .. no worries, Rose.

Danny,

I can't believe you made those statements. I'm stunned and upset by them (initially furious, I allowed myself time to cool down a bit before making this reply).

We all have good reason for the method by which we access the internet. And yes, much more can be accomplished with a PC. But to say we know next to nothing about anything advanced and to insinuated an experience deficiency is not a fair appraisal of our capabilities.

Us webtvers have accomplished allot and have allot to offer. And any of us who are willing to take the time to read the books and take the tutorials will be able to do some of that advanced stuff.

I can't wait until the day comes when I'm able to come to this forum and post that code you were looking for regarding the one time alert. Even if you don't want or need it any more, it will be one of those "Look, I learned it". And it will be the result of simply taking the time.

I'll be getting a PC sometime in the near future so I can accomplish more with imaging and audio. Probably the One Plan, so I can still stay active with webtv.

Further more, the next time you have any doubts about what a webtver can accomplish, go look at your own pages (and I mean really look) you just might be impressed. I consider your slide shows (love them babes) a prime example of how it should be done. Sure, I think mine are better, but you must be doing something right as much as I view your source. ;)

Take care, Art.

At least on one point I have to disagree with you Star...javascript is usable by webbies and many out there do know it as well as CGI (most of the "tools" out there for webbers employ most of these and were created by webbers stretching their lbb's limitations) and anyone with those interests needs the extreme zone.

Move over everyone! I have no idea at all whether this post will get thru because I am totally confused by where I AM! What did I do when I signed up for a domain name? What in the world did I think it would do other than give me a more business like look when and IF I ever got down to business???? (in my brain lane is that even possible?)
AND where the heck AM I? Why does this forum post reply look different than the other one? IS this the new thingy? I am really confused because there is no space above for entering subject..........
THEN....I saw Roses post and thought DEAER GOD....please don't change the fm...that is the ONE thing I am sure how to work.
Java acript???? Danny must have been thinking about people like me who have no intention of using such stuff, but certainly let's give those with more enthusiasm for learning credit..huh? sheeeeeeeesh Danny...what AM I gonna do with you? hmmmmmmmmm..well then never mind..
Please will someone explain why this looks different? (and please make the answer simple)

Hey Jazzy,

This is a different board, and when you reply to a topic, it keeps the same subject line .. you can't alter it.

You're at the Zone .. you can have a domain at the Zone, but it's not mandatory. At Xtreme, it's required because that's how that system works.

You may not know where you are, but you're where you need to be, sweety.. so no worries. Hakuna Matata! ;)

Now.. for Mr. Star Shadow .. The Zone supports javascript .. you can write and use all the js you want..

Xtreme is far more compatible with MSNtv now than it was before...the cpanel makes it far more user friendly all the way around.. so don't take that away from any "true webber" who wants to expand their horizons and move on.

You can re-read the posts by several members, including Mr. Majorhead who has both webbie and PC to see just how "friendly" Xtreme is now.
http://www.wtv-zone.com/klb/temp/WWWBoard/old-index.html
(I removed the .pl files, so the board is no longer functional, but it is readable)

To be honest, I don't agree with your original assessment as to what qualifies as a "true webber" either, but you're certainly entitled to your opinion, as am I. God bless America. :USA:

Hi Danny,

Allot of the books and tutorials I read suggest viewing source. Not to steal anything but to learn. In the case of your pages, I basically compare your way of doing things to mine.

I have two questions for you ...

What is the purpose of this meta tag ...

<META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">

AND ...

What is the advantage of using the onclick script as opposed to a normal link ?

Take care, Art.

3) What Webber bothers learning Java, for example, when it can never be practiced on something like the LBB?

Java and javascript are two different things. I doubt there are many Webtv only people that know how to use Java. Webtv can't use Java. It can only use javascript.

Hey, Art !

Hopefully Danny is resting and gaining strength for his next posting challenge.

Let me jump in and say this particular META tag defines the character set best used for viewing by most of the English speaking world. Dsplaying a character set is required to validate a page with the W3C Validator.

As for 'onclick' links, I have one or two somewhere just to prove I can, but also to store the code somewhere for future reference.

I find more than one 'onclick' link per page becomes tedious, something akin to Danny's long-winded posts. :rotfl:

I have to agree with Kari on this one 100% as to "webbers". The only webbers I know of have 8 legs and eat flies.
I do not enjoy bugs of any taste!

I consider the webtv as an alternate, fast connection internet access point and backup unit, with full email accessibility using mail retrieve.
I find there is not much that cannot be done with a webtv unit as far as banking, HTML coding, jscript, and surfing to find things in a more relaxed way for my computer.
Actually I love my computer and could not wish to be without. BUT do not discount the webtv LLb in what is possible.

Especially using a great multiple program total domain access like Cpanel.
With it, the possibilities become even more astounding and I am glad that I kept up with the upgrades (At 2.8.1 OS-build) because I have had no problems like so many have stated since there are always fixes and work arounds with a little applied mental-elbow grease.

Oh, and a friend of mine has a nice set of good on-tape cassette music that I did with ONLY webtv, Real Audio 5 @ 20Kb 11,500 and an AIWA digital input tape recorder hooked up to and for webtv only!

You would be surprised.

I can personally and most happily suggest that if you can, get an ADDITIONAL (eve minimum) account at xtreme to go with your wtv-zone account if you are on webtv. Then you can have cgi goodies, forums, chats, shopping carts, and people will say.....

YOU DID ALL THAT ON A WHAT?????

-It will be the best bread you ever got buttered!!!

And take a look at GESTHOME. Can't tell me you cannot do quality sites on and with only webtv.
GEST did and does!
(And for a REAL old guy too! LOL)

Yours In Peace, Randall K.

Ps.- For Mom...
The only two hangups I see here at the forum are no centering, (which will come in time :-)
and getting to the extra smileys seems a little "testy" for me.
(Another REAL old guy! LOL)
