Do we have a cgi-bin at the zone and if so how do I put something into it and how do I edit something I have in it? TIA
Hi dcloud,
There is no cgi bin at the Zone. Any cgi scripts other than those "canned" scripts in the file manager must be sent to and approved by Larry before being installed. If the script is okayed and installed, it cannot be edited. All of this is due to the security needed to keep the Zone safe, based on the way the server is set up.
Our Xtreme server has full cgi capabilities, and it's for folks who are ready to move on in scripting and such. It is not set up the way the Zone server is, and it does not have the Zone file manager (you can install any type of file manager you want, as long as you take the necessary security precautions to keep it from being abused).
You do, however, need to have a domain name in order to have an account on Xtreme.
If you're interested in finding out more, drop Larry a line.
BTW.. What type of script(s) are you looking to work with?

Nothing much just a guestbook and a bannerless counter. I’m using a counter w/banner for now and have installed the guestbook from Matt’s. I’ve got the domain name set up and when I learn more of what I’m doing will want to take the plunge but that will be awhile from now. Thanks for the info :)

I do have one more question. In the read me from Matts guestbook it said I should put the pl file in the cgi-bin. Now this is the guestbook at the bottom of the file manager and it seems to be working good. When I installed it it made it's own directory so I'm assuming all is as it should be, does this sound right? TIA

Yes, the guestbook in the file manager is set up to create it's own directory and work from there. You cannot edit the .pl file itself (without breaking it), but you can edit the html files (addguest and index) to "customize" them for your website.
