I have been playing around with SMIL (Synchronized Multamedia Integration Language). This is an XML language that can be used for making online media presentations. You must have some viewer to see it. There are some very expensive viewers and editors available. The IE6 browsers can present some SMIL using special code in an html document, but this works only on the IE6 browser. The Real One player that many have and that can be downloaded for free will display SMIL including the newer SMIL 2 that allows many more effects. If this player is installed properly, I found it displays SMIL 2 on IE6, the MSN 8.5 slight modification of IE6, Netscape 7.1, Opera 7.2, and Mozilla 1.5. SMIL will not display properly on the MSNTV box because it does not support XML based languages and does not have a Real One player installed.

If you view the page below, using Real One, you may be offered or automatically get a required update for playing the midi sound on the page. This is just a Live Crescendo sound update. In case you wonder where it is stored, it goes to liveup in C:\WINDOWS and to livesnth.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32, at least on the XP.

The URL is http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwdjrsxyz/smil/transition4.smil . If you can't resist clicking this on with the MSNTV box, no harm is done. You just get sent to a page with one image used in the display. For some reason the box attempts to display the .smil page, but it does not know what to do once it is there.

A SMIL HALLOWEEn

Here is a much more elaborate SMIL page for Halloween that demonstrates many special effects of SMIL. A huge amount of data has to be sent over the line, so the show might look a little strange until it loads a bit. It should clear up soon. If not, reload. Most SMIL presentations probably have been used by large companies on a local basis or through their T1 or other high speed web access.

The URL is http://www.wtv-zone.com/cwdjrsxyz/smil/halloween.smil . Be sure to turn up your sound high.
